HIV/AIDS Research Updates

Uganda has contributed to the pool of knowledge about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the response through research efforts by individuals and various research organizations.
Research is done on the initiative and support of local partners and sometimes in collaboration with reputable international research bodies. Occasional studies/surveys are also conducted by many government and non-government organizations.

Outstanding research institutions in the country include the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), Medical Research Council (UK), Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) , Center for Basic Research etc. Makerere University has made outstanding research contributions through several of its faculties and departments such as Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), Institute of Public Health (IPH), Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics (ISAE), Faculty of Social Sciences etc.

Research efforts in the country are centrally coordinated by the Uganda Council for Science Technology while a Self Coordinating Entity (SCE) for the research community was established under the Uganda HIV/AIDS Partnership to enhance a coordinated approach. This SCE targets bringing together researchers and research institutions to identify gaps, areas of duplication and chart out the national HIV/AIDS research agenda.

This site promotes sharing of research findings and issues on the management of HIV/AIDS research. It is planned to host an online database of planned and completed research projects in the country. All those have ever been or are currently engaged in or planning any HIV/AIDS research project are requested to download the Research inventory Form , fill it and submit online or to Uganda AIDS Commission
