Uganda 's multisectoral policy highlights the need for an information base to promote stakeholder informed decision making. The Uganda AIDS Commission established the National AIDS Documentation and Information Centre (NADIC) in 1994 to serve as a clearinghouse for HIV/AIDS information in the country. The NADIC was established with support from the Japanese and French governments. In-kind support including computer and audio-visual equipment and a vehicle was received from the Japanese Government through JICA while the French Government provided technical support through staff training, acquisition of information materials and later support to the development of this website. Staff training was provided through the Regional Information Centre for HIV Prevention (CRIPS ) in Paris , France (link CRIPS to http://www.lecrips.net/ ). NADIC has since received support from various development agencies.

NADIC has over the years served the needs of HIV/AIDS stakeholders (the primary target audience) at various levels and the general public through the library, audiovisual and database sections. It is widely recognized as a one stop centre for a wide range of HIV/AIDS on the epidemic. It also spearheads the implementation of the AIDS Competence Programme in Uganda (ACP)

Experience has however revealed many challenges to HIV/AIDS knowledge and information management including limited prioritization at institutional level especially in the government sector, financial, material and human resource constraints and a general poor information culture that impacts on information literacy.

There is growing need to define the knowledge and information management system for HIV/AIDS in the country. The process for developing this system through stakeholder consensus has been initiated. Please join UAC in realizing this objective.
