RECENT ACTIVITIES

President Museveni’s Public HIV Test Goes Viral

The public HIV testing of the President of Uganda received wide press coverage in local and international media. The President’s publicly testing along with key Ugandan leaders was to demonstrate to Ugandans the importance of knowing one’s HIV status.  The event took place on November, 8th 2013 at Kiswa Health Center IV in Kampala.

Uganda Marks World AIDS Day

Uganda joined the rest of the world in marking World AIDS Day on December 1st in Mbarara District.The occasion was officiated by Hon.Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, Minister of State for Health, and was attended by several development partners, Members of Parliament, government officials, implementing partners, people living with HIV, UAC Staff, and the public.In the build up towards World AIDS Day, a panel of experts from Uganda AIDS Commission, and UNAIDS briefed 40 journalists about the progress made in tackling HIV in Uganda, as well as the HIV prevention message. The press briefing led to numerous HIV related news stories on radio, TV and key newspapers. Furthermore, several talk shows were held in the country to further share the HIV messages.

The Champion of EMTCT Meets Religious and Cultural Leaders

The First Lady, Janet Museveni had a dialogue with 120 key Religious and Cultural leaders from Kampala region in order to share the EMTCT Campaign message. The meeting focused on equipping leaders with the HIV prevention message in order to reduce new HIV infections especially in unborn babies. The dialogue was held on November 14th2013 in the President’s Office Building.

High HIV Prevalence in Fishing Communities

About 80 stakeholders convened to share findings of studies conducted in several fishing communities in Lake Victoria on access to health facilities and HIV. Data shows high HIV prevalence rates ranging from 25-45% given that less than 25% of these communities have access to basic health services.  It was agreed that there is a need to increase the provision of health services to all fishing communities in Uganda. The meeting was organized by Uganda AIDS Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and International AIDS Vaccine Initiative in Kampala on December 4th.

 

ONGOING ACTIVITIES

Signing of MOU: UAC and Districts

The signing of Memoranda of Understanding between districts and UAC are on going across the country.  The objective is to have a collaborative framework for coordinating HIV activities between district local governments and UAC.  The signing of the MOU will facilitate the release of 10 millions Uganda shillings to districts to implement HIV activities.

EMTCT Kampala campaign

EMTCT Kampala campaign is on till end of January 2014.  HIV services are on-going in all KCCA health centers around Kampala.

Dissemination of guidelines for setting up District AIDS Structures

UAC is in the process of disseminating guidelines to all local governments to facilitate the creation of HIV/AIDS coordination structures at the decentralized levels.The guidelines stipulated the approved structures, their composition and roles.

UAC Assesses District HIV Activities

UAC staff and line ministries are traversing the country to supervise HIV activities carried out in districts over the past six months.  The objective of this exercise is to assess and establish the status of HIV activities in Uganda.

EMTCT Campaign in West Nile region, February 2014

Aim: To disseminate the HIV prevention message and to build the capacity of media to effectively report on HIV/AIDS issues with the view to relay clear and correct HIV messages to target audiences.

Launch of the HIV Message Clearing Committee, January 2014, Venue to be Confirmed

Convener: Uganda AIDS Commission
Aim: To create awareness among all HIV message developers country-wide of the existence of the Message Clearing Committee
